Who touched my gun?

I still can't get one thing. The artillery was supposed to be the most poor of whole army, isn't there an irony when guns are so important on battlefield (of course, depends on generals...)? Artillerymen couldn't be weak and poor, I think they had to be very tough, not even to defend.. Well, sorry, just wondering.
